The Messy Parts Too

A photography and digital art project

CW: bodily fluids (no photos on this page)

This project started in November 2024, when I decided to start taking photos of my period blood. I wasn’t entirely sure what I was going to do with them at the time, other than knowing I wanted to create something as a commentary on how periods are still seen as a taboo topic in mainstream society, which also could serve as a way to help normalise talking about them a bit more.

To start with, I just collected the photos in one place, and gradually over time kept coming back to them to explore ways I might display them, and also ways I could alter the images digitally to create various art pieces from them.

As a nobinary person who menstruates, I often feel left out of conversations around periods, so this was also an important part of what I wanted to represent with my art.

I have curated a range of collections of art as part of this project. More information about each collection, along with digital art & prints for many can be found below.

Using two specific photos I had taken which had turned out looking like raw crystals, I digitally altered them by layering their saturation levels so I could then adjust the colours. Using this technique, I have created my Queer Vampire Crystals, available in all different flag colours as prints. Custom mixed colours are also available as digital designs.

In this collection all the images used have been edited so they don’t look like blood.

text reads "visual arts" in a funky varied font. Background is a film reel with watercolour paint splatters on and around it in purple, yellow, and turquoise. Above this are three hanging lamps with beams shining down on the text.
