Gender Isn’t A Binary, So Why Should The Voice Be?

Gender isn’t a binary & social stereotypes of how certain gendered voices sound are bullshit.*

Your voice is YOUR voice.

Your gender identity, or the way you visually present yourself does not dictate how your voice “should” sound.

For some people, some or many of the characteristics of a stereotypical (insert gender here) voice is exactly what they feel is most authentically them, and that’s awesome!

But in the same way clothes say nothing about someone’s gender identity, neither does someone’s voice – including yours!

*I want to acknowledge that unfortunately, many members of society don’t understand this & as trans people, in order to keep ourselves safe we often have to present our appearance & voice in a way that aligns with social stereotypes, even if they don’t align with us internally.

You are still valid & authentically you, even if you change your voice in order to be gendered correctly by the general population. I hope one day this won’t be something that we have to think about, and can be free to just have fun with our voices.

An illustration of a person holding a big yellow sign that says "It's okay if the voice that feels most authentically you doesn't match the stereotypes society assigns to your gender." The person is white with long pink hair. They are wearing a dark purple mask, a dark purple jacket, and a light purple wide brimmed hat. The background is the progress Pride flag, which is the 6 rainbow stripes with a chevron on the left with a white, pink & blue stripe representing trans people, and a brown and black stripe representing Black and Brown queer people.
